Many people misunderstand the meaning of self care.
Self care starts with you looking after yourself and accessing how you are genuinely doing emotionally, physically and emotionally and addressing what is lacking.
Spending money you don’t have to treat yourself is NOT money well spent.
Being financially responsible is part of self care. Going into debt is not. Check this post for some tips on how to save money.
Over drinking is also not self care, and you should be addressing it. Anything in excess is harmful.
The same goes for overeating. Indulging, on a few occasions, is okay in my books.
If it becomes a daily occurrence, then you should dedicate some time and energy to understand why you are doing that so you can correct it.
Best Self Care Tips That Won't Cost Money
A big part of taking care of yourself is paying attention to your habits and changing what is not serving you.
Prioritizing your health and wellbeing is vital. No one can pour from an empty cup. So please, put yourself first!
Everyone around you benefits when you are feeling good and happy. I have compiled an awesome list with inexpensive self care tips that will improve your quality of life.
#1 Getting Outside
Hiking or just a walk, get outside of the house. Being in contact with nature makes you see the world through different lenses.
It lowers stress levels and puts you in a great mood.
Realizing the world is indeed a beautiful place, and the breath of fresh air will make you feel alive.
#2 Take A Nice Bath
Seriously, who doesn’t love a warm bath? When I am working insane hours, this is my way to discharge.
Get the water running. Play some soothing music, darken the room and light some candles. Maybe grab a cup of tea? Enjoy and RELAX!
It is heavenly!!! You will feel amazing and reinvigorated!
#3 Move Your Body
It doesn’t matter if you workout at home or the gym, like to run or go for walks. Just get moving!
There are several benefits associated with leading an active lifestyle. Improves your mental health and mood, increases energy levels, makes you sleep better, assists in weight loss, builds muscles and strong bones.
No one has ever regretting exercising. It makes you look good and feel awesome besides boosting self-confidence.
Meditation is becoming more and more part of people’s daily routine. Why? Because it makes a significant impact on your overall wellbeing.
It calms the mind, reduces stress, controls anxiety, enhances self-awareness, increases focus, and promotes emotional health.
Do I need to say more? Get into the habit of meditating at least 10 minutes a day.
You can concentrate on your breathing and clear any thoughts that might be crowding your mind.
I have the free version of the InsightTimer app installed on my phone, and I love it. Give it a try.
We live such busy lives. We MUST find the time to stop everything, quiet our minds and practice mindfulness. Or else our mental health will pay the price.
#5 Give Yourself A Back Massage
Yes, this is exactly what I meant! It is possible and feels painfully good lol.
A tennis ball is all you need. On the floor or against the wall, place the ball against your back. Start moving side to side, up and down. That is it!
You control the pressure and say bye-bye to all the knots and tension spots in your back.
By the way, you can also use this method to massage your feet. Just step on the ball and move your foot around. It is glorious!
#6 Focus On Being Present
Do not check your phone when you wake up and before bedtime for at least 2 hours.
Do the things you need to do in the morning and before bed, but more than that, be fully present.
Pay attention to your family, ask how their day was, encourage communication, be genuinely interested in their lives, have dinner together with a no-phone policy at the table.
Watch your kids during their extra-curricular activities, and cheer for them. It is a boost to their self-esteem!
Snuggle with your children, read a story and tuck them into bed.
People waste so much time being on their phones and don’t notice the time passing by. No wonder you have no time!
Focus on being more present, and you will be much happier in life.
#7 Quality Sleep
Sleeping well is essential for you to function at your best and incredibly important for your health.
You wake up refreshed and ready to face the day with a positive attitude.
Sleep deprivation causes irregular appetite regulation and is linked to weight gain and obesity. It increases levels of ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates appetite, and reduces levels of leptin, the hormone that suppresses appetite.
A solid 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep will get you a stronger immune system, improve concentration and productivity.
What are you waiting for? Go to bed!
#8 Spend Time With Your Pets
Dogs are the best to teach us how to live life to the fullest. There are a few lessons we can learn from them.
How excited are your furbabies to see you every time you come back home? The routine things we take for granted, they don’t. Value more what you have and love deeper!
Spend time with your pets, talk to them! Take them for a walk, play, run, cuddle with them on the couch, let them sleep with you.
Give your full undivided attention. Welcome your pet’s unconditional love, and do the same in return.
Dogs will enrich every moment of your life in so many ways. They are angels on earth!
Don’t let a day goes by without acknowledging their importance. Your heart will always be full!
#9 Read A Book
Reading will open your mind to new possibilities, stimulate you mentally, improve memory and analytical thinking, expand your vocabulary and knowledge.
To keep your brain active and healthy, make reading a habit—reserve an hour a day to your favourite book.
The more you read, the more you know. Immersing yourself in a great book presents a world of knowledge and information—all available at your fingertips.
Implement these self care tips and see your life shifting.
